We often talk about artificial intelligence as if it learns the way humans do. But the truth is, AI doesn’t experience the world like humans at all. While both humans and AI improve over time, how we gain experience is fundamentally different. Humans learn from mistakes, adjust behaviour based on feedback and develop wisdom and expertise over time. By contrast, AI learns by processing vast amounts of data, recognising patterns and being trained on specific tasks or goals. There’s no emotion, no sense of self, no lived experience.
